Our mind exists out of two separate parts, the conscious mind and the subconscious or unconscious mind. The first one is there for logic and reasoning, for deliberation, contemplation, judging and accepting, deals with time and planning, short term memories, the second part is the subconscious mind, It takes care of all automated processes, like your body temperature, blood pressure, it holds all your feelings and memories, habits and believes, likes pleasure, but avoids pain, has no sense of time and cannot analyse and criticise.

The conscious mind communicates with the outside world and decides what goes into the subconscious mind to stay there. It is judging if the information can be trusted, and then the subconscious stores it as valid information. The conscious mind itself is the only one capable of changing the subconscious. The subconscious stores all the information and delivers it trough all kind of automated processes. It is so powerful, that the conscious mind can not stop it. To see for yourself how powerful it is you can do the following test. Try to look at the word below without saying the word in your mind, just look at it, but don´t read it:

APPLE

No matter how hard you try, you will not succeed in looking at the word without reading it. It is because your subconscious is more powerful than your conscious mind. This explains why it is so hard to break old habits or unwanted behaviour.

You could therefore also see the conscious mind as “the thinker” and the subconscious mind as “the doer”

In hypnotherapy, the hypnotherapist will, using the conscious mind of the person receiving therapy, replace the information stored in the subconscious by attaching a greater emotional load to the stored information then there was before.
